An Extra Place at the Table: 01. Epitaph

An Extra Place at the Table:
01. Epitaph.
1. You are required to select a lost subject.
2. Create an epitaph for your lost subject. Then using type/image, communicate its loss and celebrate the legacy it left behind.
Two spoken stories. Two secret dreams.

How do we play with others? What does playing with dolls houses allow us to do?
We imagine lives, stories, futures, hopes and dreams for inanimate objects through play.

While two children play out loud, sharing a story and creating memories. Those same children are creating their own stories inside their heads, imagining things different from one another. No two children see the world in the same way. Yet with social norms and judgements from those around us, we are pressuring them to conform and 'be normal'. To see the world in a literal, realistic manner.
How can we explore the loss of childhood and imagination?
By seeing the world as a child would.

I set about creating glasses which would reduce the lenses clarity, forcing those wearing them to take a step back and reflect on the innocence and freedom that is lost with the increase of opinions from others and the tasks we conform to. The words are illegible while wearing the glasses, signifying how our problems and restraints are constantly restricting us from viewing the world in a clearer, more youthful and imaginative way. What we say, believe and see are completely different. And the older we get, the harder they are to ignore.
